Newfoundland and Labrador warned that heavy weather is on the way

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Newfoundland is bracing for two snowstorms that are expected to hit the island this week.

Forecasters say the Avalon Peninsula is expected to see the most snow.

Provincial Aerospace meteorologist Brian Walsh say the first storm will hit the island later today, bringing up to 12 centimetres of snow to eastern Newfoundland.

He says the second system will pack more of a punch.

That storm is forecast to arrive Thursday morning, bringing heavy snow mixed with ice pellets and rain.

More than 30 centimetres of snow is in the forecast for eastern portions of the island, and winds are expected to reach 100 kilometres per hour.
