TORONTO — A new ski resort in France, more properties in China, and expansion and upgrades at its Cancun resort are among the announcements by Club Med executives at a travel trade function in Toronto last night.
Describing the Ontario market as “dynamic”, Club Med Vice-President Canada Carolyne Doyon, gave details on the new Val Thorens Sensations ski resort in the Domaine des 3 Vallees in France’s Northern Alps. The new flagship of the Club Med ‘Snow’ offer that opens this December will be in operation for the winter (November to May).
The 384-room, upscale 4-trident property with a “modern vibe” is a “skis on” resort that will feature innovative sliding sports such as speed riding, ATVs on ice or boardercross, plus a Club Med Spa by Carita and enhanced technology throughout.
In other news, Doyon told Travelweek that Chinese travellers will soon make up the second biggest clientele for Club Med after France. After the June opening of its third village in China – the stylish 267-room Dong’Ao Island resort, a 4-trident property in the southeastern part of Zhuhai in Guangdong province, Club Med is planning to open two more properties in China by 2015, for a total of five villages.
Closer to home, Club Med’s Cancun Yucatan resort in Mexico, a favourite with families, now features new spaces including 60 new family rooms, a new Petit Club Med for two and three year olds, a new Argentinian grill called La Estancia and a redesigned Las Cazuelas restaurant, plus a new Maya Lounge, which functions as a trendy bar and entertainment area.
Club Med’s tiered commission program is 10-15%.
