TORONTO — Chelsea Hotel, Toronto, Canada’s largest hotel, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
The hotel will launch several activities over the next few months to commemorate the Chelsea’s importance as a pioneer in Toronto’s hospitality industry.
Officially opening its doors on Oct. 15 1975, the building consisted of 808 guestrooms and was originally designed as apartment suites and university residences. Soon afterward, the building was converted into a 1,000-room hotel – the Delta Chelsea Inn. In October 1990, the hotel unveiled its new $80 million expansion project that brought the total room count to 1,590 – becoming Canada’s largest hotel. To this day, the hotel continues to be the largest in the British Commonwealth.
In 2013, Chelsea Hotel, Toronto became a part of the Langham Hospitality Group as an independent property and since that time, there has seen a total investment of close to $30 million dollars, including the renovation of 750 guestrooms; the lobby; three restaurants (T| Bar, Market Garden and express|o); updated meeting and banquet space; and an update to the hotel exterior (balconies).
“Celebrating 40 years of service definitely marks a key milestone in the history of the Chelsea. As an iconic landmark among the leading first class hotels in Toronto, it has definitely shaped the hospitality industry as people know it,” said General Manager, Rob Housez.
The hotel’s celebration is also about giving back. As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, the Chelsea Hotel will present a cheque for $100,000 to SickKids Foundation. This is part of a five-year fundraising plan with a goal of $500,000 to support AboutKidsHealth.ca – providing one of Canada’s finest, most comprehensive child health resources, enabling all families to have access to the child health information they need, whenever they need it, wherever they live.
In light of the celebration of the 40th anniversary, the Chelsea Hotel is offering its guests a special deal – arrive on any Thursday, Friday or Saturday now through Jan. 7 2016 with a minimum three-night stay and enjoy the third night at $19.75.
